TRADEMARK OF THE WEEK – SKITTLES
Skittles are a type of multi-coloured, fruit-flavoured, round candy produced and marketed by the Wrigley Company. These candies consist of hard sugar shells imprinted with the letter “S”. Skittles were first made commercially in 1974 by a British company, and they derive their name from the sports game of the same name due to the resemblance of the candy to items used in the game. Skittles’ marketing campaign “Taste the rainbow” began in 1994, and it is one of the longest-running campaigns ever.
Due to their high sugar content, Skittles are commonly used to treat hypoglycaemia in diabetics effectively. The logo for Skittles was registered with the EUIPO on July 13th, 1998, bearing the serial number 000001313. The mark is figurative in nature and falls under classes 29, 30, and 32 of the international classification of goods and services for the purposes of the registration of marks.
