TRADEMARK OF THE WEEK – MCDONALD’S
McDonald’ is an American multinational fast food chain, it was founded in 1940 by brothers Maurice and Richard McDonald in San Bernardino, California. It has since grown to become one of the most popular food chains in the world, renowned for its burgers. In the 1960s, the chain refined its logo and introduced the famous double-arch “M” design, which has become one of the most recognizable logos globally. The inspiration for the logo came from the tall yellow arches that adorned earlier McDonald’s restaurant rooftops.
The logo featuring the “M” design was registered with the EUPIO on 15th July 1999, with the serial number 000062570. The mark is figurative and falls under classes 25, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 35, 41, 42 of The International Classification of Goods and Services for the Purposes of the Registration of Marks. As of 2021, McDonald’s serves over 69 million customers daily in more than 40,000 outlets across over 100 countries worldwide. Its menu has expanded over the years to include a wide variety of items, such as chicken sandwiches, salads, and breakfast options, but its burgers remain its most iconic and sought-after offerings.
