Macmillan, formally known as Macmillan Publishers Ltd is an American-British publishing company. Macmillan Publishers is a global publishing company operating over 70 countries with imprints in United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Australia, South Africa and India. It is considered to be one of the ‘Big Five’ English Language publishers.

Macmillan was founded by Daniel Macmillan and Alexander Macmillan in London in 1843. Daniel was the business brain, whereas Alexander set the literary foundations by publishing notable authors as Charles Kingsley (1855), Thomas Hughes (1859), Francis Turner Palgrave (1861), Christina Rossetti (1862), Lewis Carroll (1865) and Rudyard Kipling (1890) and many more. 

In 1999, Holtzbrinck Publishing Group purchased the company marking the end of Macmillan family. The operations in United States were changed from the Holtzbrinck Publishing to Macmillan in 2017. In the early 21st century, Macmillan owned offices in more than 40 countries with headquarters in London.

The trademark of “Macmillan” was registered in USPTO bearing registration number 0969205 on September 25, 1973.
