TODAY’S TRADEMARK – PEDIGREE
The company filed for the trademark with the USPTO on March 17, 1992 and was assigned registration number 1679350. Their mark was first used in March 1989.
The American company Mars, Incorporated owns Pedigree Pet Foods, a pet food division with offices in McLean, Virginia, and plants in Melton Mowbray and Birstall, Leeds, England. The huge American confectionery business Mars Limited, which had been headquartered in Slough since 1932, purchased Manchester’s Chappel Brothers in 1934. This business canned low-quality meat under the “Chappie” name for use as dog food. In the 1950s, two new dog food brands were introduced: Pal and Lassie.
Mars acquired Los Angeles’s Kal Kan Foods in 1968. In order to sell dog food outside of the US, Mars utilised the name Pedigree, which Kal Kan Foods adopted in 1988. The following year, Mars included the global Whiskas trademark into the branding of their cat food.
With projected revenues of US$45 billion in 2022, Mars Inc. is a global American company that produces candy, pet food, and other food items in addition to offering animal care services.
