TRADEMARK OF THE WEEK – THE AMERICAN BOARD OF EMERGENCY MEDICINE
The American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) certifies emergency physicians who meet its educational, professional standing, and examination standards. ABEM certification is sought and earned by emergency physicians on a voluntary basis. ABEM is not a membership association. ABEM is recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties. ABEM holds the interests of patients and their families in the highest standing, particularly with regard to the provision of the safest and highest-quality emergency care. ABEM addresses its commitment to patients by supporting the physicians who provide care to the acutely ill and injured, and by working to transform the specialty of Emergency Medicine. The ABEM Foundation convenes leaders in the specialty to address concerns such as access to emergency care, medical professionalism, ensuring the certification process is relevant and fair, and advancing the specialty. Research conducted by the Foundation aims to strengthen the value of certification and the delivery of emergency care. Projects that support this vision include solutions to physician burnout, how physicians can best maintain competency over the course of their careers, and validation of certification processes.
