TRADEMARK OF THE WEEK – BURBERRY
B
Burberry is a British luxury fashion house which designs and distributes ready to wear trench coats, footwear, leather goods, eyewear, fragrances, fashion accessories and cosmetics. It is headquartered in London, England. Burberry was established in 1856 by Thomas Burberry who originally focused on the development of outdoor attire.
Initially, Burberry was an independent family-controlled company until 1955, when it was reincorporated. In 2005, it demerged from GUS plc, the company’s former majority shareholder.
Between the years 2001-2005, Burberry became associated with “chav” and football hooligan culture which changed the brand reputation to be attributable to lower priced products, the proliferation of counterfeit goods adopting Burberry’s trademark check pattern and adoption by celebrities who identified with “chav” culture. In 2021, Burberry announced that it aims to become a “climate positive” company by 2040.
The trademark of “Burberry” was registered in USPTO bearing registration number 1133122 on April 15, 1980.
