Wichita Festivals was first established as a non-profit corporation in the State of Kansas in the year 1971. The organization consists of nine full-time employees and is managed by 15 member board of directors who hold the office for three years. The organisation first held its festival in the year 1972 for 2 days. Eventually the name of the festival was changed to Wichita River Festival in the year 1974. In 21st Century, events like Chili, Barbeque Cookoff and Wichita Flight Festival was also produced by WFI. The organization also contributed to the community celebration of the U.S bicentennial.
