Today’s Trademark – UNITED STATES DANCE CHAMPIONSHIPS
The USBC began in 1971 at the Waldorf Astoria and remained there until 1975, when it was moved to Washington, D.C. From 1976 to 1981, it relocated to the Waldorf Astoria, then to the Felt Forum at Madison Square Garden in 1982. In 1983, it returned to the Waldorf Astoria, and in 1984, it was split between the Felt Forum and the Waldorf Astoria. It was again relocated to the Sheraton Bal Harbour in Miami Beach, FL in 1985. Until 1988, the Championships were held there. It began in 1989 at the Fontainebleau Hilton and ended in 1990 at the Sheraton Bal Harbour. The USDC has been held at the Fontainebleau Hilton Hotel in Fontainebleau, France, since 1991. The World Professional Championships (Standard) were held by ABC in 1984 in conjunction with World Dance Promotions at the Felt Forum, Madison Square Garden, New York City, and again in 1998 in Miami. The name of the annual US Championship was updated in 1997 to reflect the new dance world theme. The “United States Dance Championships” is the current name.
