TODAY’S TRADEMARK – TOYS “R” US
Toys “R” Us is an American retailer of toys, clothing, and baby products. It was founded in 1948 by Charles Lazarus. Originally, the company started as a baby goods and furniture store called Children’s Bargain Town in Washington, D.C. Inspired by the post-war baby boom, Lazarus expanded to toys, and thereafter, Toys “R” Us was founded.
Toys “R” Us entered the European market in 1985 with its first store located in the United Kingdom. At its peak, the chain had over 105 stores in the country. On July 4, 2002, Toys “R” Us registered its mark with the EUIPO, bearing the serial number 000400929. The mark can be described as figurative in nature and falls under class 35 of The International Classification of Goods and Services for the Purposes of the Registration of Marks. In 2018, Toys “R” Us, Inc. declared bankruptcy. However, the iconic toy store is now returning and has opened stores in nine new locations across the USA.
