TODAY’S TRADEMARK – SONY

Sony, formally known as Sony Group Corporation, is a major Japanese manufacturer of consumer electronics products. It is also involved in music, films, and financial services among numerous other ventures. The company’s slogan is “be moved”. The company was originally incorporated by Ibuka Masaru and Morita Akio in 1946 as Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering Corporation (“Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo”). Ibuka and Morita continued to work for the next 40 years, which is recognised as one of “business history’s most productive and intriguing relationships”.

In January 1958, “Sony” became the official name for the company which was derived from the Latin word “sonus” meaning sound. Sony’s first consumer product was an electric rice cooker. Although, this product sold poorly, it had a successful business in repairing radios and other electric equipment. In 1960s, business in the United States prompted the creation of Sony Corporation of America, headquartered in New York City.

In 2020, Sony was recognised as one of the largest Japanese companies by market capitalization and operating profit, valued at over $90 billion.

The trademark “Sony” was registered in USTPO bearing registration number 0770275 on May 26, 1964.
