Nike, Inc., formerly named as Blue Ribbon Sports, is an American sportswear company headquartered in Beaverton, Oregon. It was originally founded in 1964 as Blue Ribbon Sports by Bill Bowerman, a track-field coach at the University of Oregon with his former student Phil Knight. The first retail outlet was opened in 1966 and the Nike brand shoe was launched in 1972. In 1978, the company was renamed Nike, Inc., and went public in the next two years.
From the late 1980s, Nike constantly expanded its business and diversified its line of products through several acquisitions such as Cole Haan (1988), Converse, Inc. (2003), Canstar Sports, Inc. (1994), Umbro (2008). In the early 21st century, Nike began selling sports-technology accessories including high-altitude wrist compasses and heart-rate monitors. By this time, Nike has retail outlets and distributors in over 170 countries and its well-known logo “swoosh”- a curved check mark is recognized throughout the world.
The trademark “Nike” was registered in USTPO bearing registration number 1772987 on May 25, 1993.
