TODAY’S TRADEMARK – NATIONAL RIFLE ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA
The NRA filed for the trademark with the USPTO on March 24, 1992 and was assigned registration number 1680653. The mark has been in use since December 1871.
The National Rifle Association of America (NRA) is an American lobbying group for gun rights. The National Rifle Association was established in 1871 by Union veterans Col. William C. Church and Gen. George Wingate, who were appalled by the poor shooting displayed by their soldiers, with the goal of promoting rifle marksmanship.
In American politics, the NRA is one of the most powerful advocacy organisations. The Political Victory Fund (PVF) is managed by the lobbying division of the NRA, known as the NRA Institute for Legislative Action (NRA-ILA).
The group has impacted legislation, taken part in or started lawsuits, and supported or opposed a number of local, state, and federal candidates throughout the course of its existence. The NRA-ILA is well-known for its lobbying efforts on the Dickey Amendment, which prohibits the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) from using government funds to promote gun control, and the Firearm Owners Protection Act, which relaxed the limits of the Gun Control Act of 1968.
Today, it is a well-known advocacy group for gun rights and still teaches handgun competency and safety. In addition, the group supports competitive marksmanship competitions and produces multiple magazines. As of December 2018, the NRA claimed to have approximately 5 million members, however that number has not been officially verified.
