TODAY’S TRADEMARK – MINECRAFT
Minecraft is a 3D sandbox video game developed by Mojang. Minecraft has since been ported to several other platforms and is the best-selling video game of all time, with over 238 million copies sold and nearly 140 million monthly active users as of 2021. In Minecraft, players explore a blocky, procedurally generated 3D world with virtually infinite terrain, and may discover and extract raw materials, craft tools and items, and build structures, earthworks and simple machines. Depending on game mode, players can fight computer-controlled mobs, as well as cooperate with or compete against other players in the same world. In 2014, Mojang and the Minecraft intellectual property were purchased by Microsoft for US$2.5 billion.
The term “Minecraft” was registered by Microsoft corporation as a word mark on 16th February 2011 under the Australian trademark office bearing serial number. 1409122. It falls under the classes 9, 25, 28, 41 of the International Classification of Goods and Services for the Purposes of the Registration of Marks having its origin from US. An interesting fact is that it is a compulsory education for 13-year-olds at Viktor Rydberg secondary school in Stockholm, Sweden. This is said to be because it helps to teach city planning, planning for the future, and environmental issues. Minecraft was originally called Cave Game, then Minecraft: Order of the Stone, before simply Minecraft which was created in mere 6 days. Over 200 million copies of Minecraft have been sold worldwide.
