H&M, or Hennes & Mauritz AB, is a Swedish clothing retail giant renowned for its affordable and fast-fashion clothing. The company was founded in 1947 by Erling Persson as “Hennes,” initially catering exclusively to women’s clothing. In 1968, H&M acquired Mauritz Widforss, a men’s clothing store, leading to the brand’s rebranding as Hennes & Mauritz or H&M. The 1970s and 1980s saw the brand’s expansion within Sweden and into neighbouring countries like Norway and Denmark.

H&M continued its global push by entering markets such as the UK in 1976 and Germany in 1980.The 1990s marked H&M’s entry into international markets, including the US in 2000, and the launch of its first online store in 1998. The brand’s collaborations with high-profile designers like Karl Lagerfeld and Versace garnered attention.

The mark is registered by H & M Hennes & Mauritz Ab Corporation Sweden for goods and services under class 3 (cancelled), 14, 18, 25 and 35 of the IC. Offering goods and services pertaining to accessories, clothing, toiletry etc. Registered on 24-10-2000 and has now been renewed for the second time. It bears the registration no. 2397326 Over the years, H&M diversified its offerings to include home goods and beauty products.

As sustainability concerns grew, the company intensified its focus on ethical practices and digitalization. Despite challenges, H&M remains a global fashion retail leader, recognized for its swift expansion, commitment to affordability, and evolving efforts to address sustainability concerns within the fashion industry.

H&M had to face criticism for contributing to fast-fashion’s environmental and ethical issues but it responded by introducing sustainability measures, such as the Conscious Collection featuring eco-friendly materials, and embraced recycling initiatives.
