TODAY’S TRADEMARK – FANTA
Fanta, owned by The Coca-Cola Company was registered for trademark on 29-10-2013 with the registration no. 4424311. The protection is related to design plus the words, however no claim is made to the exclusive right to use the design of the bottle. The mark consists of a stylized design of a silhouette of a bottle with the wording “FANTA” and a leaf design within a quadrilateral on the neck of a bottle.
It is registered for class 32 of the IC that deals with soft drinks. There are more than 200 flavours world wide, in early 2023 the company announced that Lilt which is a pineapple and grapefruit soft drink sold in certain countries would be simply rebranded and sold as Fanta Pineapple and Grapefruit.
Fun fact: Fanta was actually invented in Nazi Germany by the American Company using available resources. The fruit flavoured soda gained popularity and became a symbol of nationalistic pride as it was consumed widely by Germans, including the Nazi officials.
The ingredients of the drink included leftover apple fibres, cider press mash and whey, reflecting the scarcity of the wartime period. An author Mark Pendergrast said that β[Fanta] was made from the leftovers of the leftovers.β While coca-cola has a major share in the distribution, Fanta has a 5% share in the Indian market.
