The Electric Power Research Institute, Inc. (EPRI), is an American non-profit organization that conducts research and development related to the generation, delivery and use of electricity to help and address challenges in electricity including efficiency, reliability, affordability, safety, health and the environment.
The initiative to create an independent research and development organization to support the electricity sector and address its technical and operational challenges was led by Dr. Chauncey Starr, then the Dean of the UCLA School of Engineering and Applied Science. Starr served as the first President of EPRI for five years and retired at the age of 65, but he continued to work at EPRI for the next 30 years.
EPRI’s research portfolio states that its work encompasses research in technology, operations, the workforce, systems planning and other areas that guide and support the development of new policies and regulatory framework, market opportunities and value to energy consumers.
The trademark of “Electric Power Research Institute” was registered in USPTO bearing registration number 1134317 on April 29, 1980.
