TODAY’S TRADEMARK – CAPE MENTELLE
In 1970, Cape Mentelle Vineyards was founded by wine industry pioneer David Hohnen and his brothers Mark and Giles. With merely 16 hectares of vines planted on what is now known as the “Wallcliffe Vineyard,” their amazing Cape Mentelle adventure got its start.
On January 19, 1993, the Company registered its trademark with the USPTO under registration number 1747893. Use of their mark dates back to May 1990.
Cape Mentelle Vineyards, also known as Cape Mentelle, is a wine estate located 274 kilometres southwest of Perth, Western Australia, in the Margaret River region. David Hohnen, a third-generation farmer who studied viticulture and winemaking in California in the 1960s, along with his brothers Mark and Giles, developed the winery. Cape Mentelle is one of Margaret River’s “founding five” wineries. It gained notoriety when their Cabernet Sauvignon won the Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy in 1983 and 1984.
In order to enhance quality, comprehend the potential of the fruit from each unique vineyard, and create a unique house style, Cape Mentelle experimented with wine making throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Part of the style that developed is the personality of the grape varietals and the unique qualities of the local terroir.
The establishment of the 23-hectare Trinders Vineyard in 1988 and the Chapman Brook Vineyard in the early 1990s resulted in an increase in the area under vine. At this point, Cape Mentelle was well-known throughout the Australian market.
Built on strong roots, Cape Mentelle is now a part of Paragon Wine Estates, which is owned by Endeavour Group Limited.
