Today’s Trademark-AMERICAN MOTHERS
The values of American Mothers, Inc. started in Anna Reeves Jarvis’ heart and mind as she tried to repair the harm done to families caught up in the Civil War’s conflict.
This simple observance developed into the national holiday known as Mother’s Day, for which American Mothers is the official sponsor, by organizing a day of love and friendship across battle lines. The idea for a Mothers Committee was born in 1931, when Eleanor Roosevelt announced the establishment of a national programme to help dependent mothers and vulnerable children celebrate Mother’s Day better. The Golden Rule Mother’s Day Committee, sponsored by J.C. Penney’s Golden Rule Foundation, created a fund to support a “Golden Rule observance of Mother’s Day.
“The funds were distributed to local hospitals, nursing homes, orphanages, churches, and other welfare organization to be used where they were most needed. The American Mothers Committee of the Golden Rule Foundation had gathered influential New York City figures at the Waldorf Astoria in 1935, where Honorary Chairman Sarah Delano Roosevelt presented Lucy Keen Johnson of Georgia as the first American Mother of the Year.
Since then, American Mothers has selected an inspirational mother for this prestigious award from nominations received from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.
