The United States Polo Association (USPA) is the national governing body for the sport of polo in the United States. founded in 1890 by David Grubbs and today serves over 4,500 individual members and 250 polo clubs in the United States and Canada. Its functions include promoting the game, arranging and supervising polo tournaments, competitions, and games, and providing rules, handicaps, and conditions for those events, including the welfare and safety of players and mounts.
USPA has launched several initiatives to teach the sport to new players in the United States, including Regional Polo Centers and clubs that provide instruction and host schools around the nation. In order to develop and improve the game of polo in the United States, the USPA established Team USPA in 2010. The program’s goals are to find young, skilled players in the country and offer them coaching, training and playing opportunities that will eventually produce a pool of better amateur and professional players.
A special documentary on polo’s comeback in America ran on “60 Minutes” in 2012, featuring multiple interviews with devoted players and ambassadors throughout the country. The part focused on Work to Ride, a specialist initiative of the USPA that uses polo and other horse-related activities to support inner-city youngsters in Philadelphia.
