An industry leader in the production of exquisite English roses is David Austin Roses Limited. Over 200 different types of roses are produced by this family-run enterprise, which is situated in a rural area of Shropshire. The first English rose, “Constance Spry,” was introduced by David Austin Sr. (1926-2018) in 1961. Nearly 60 years later, his collection of English roses is renowned worldwide and has garnered several accolades for its remarkable beauty, delicious fragrances, and superb garden performance.
David’s first significant success came in 1983, when he debuted three English roses at the Chelsea Flower Show, one of which was named for his close friend and horticulture mentor, Graham Thomas. Rosa “Graham Thomas” (Ausmas) received an enormous amount of positive press and public response, and David attributed this to the rose that was most responsible for the English Roses’ success and fame. The first of many gold medals were awarded at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show the following year, and the David Austin rose garden progressively ascended to the top of the list of attractions for guests, a tradition that still exists today.
