From its founding in 1935 until 2019, 20th Century was one of the “Big Six” major American film studios for over 80 years. Formerly known as Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation, it was formed in 1935 from the merger of the Fox Film Corporation and 20th Century Pictures as one of the original Big Five among eight majors of Hollywood’s Golden Age. In 1985, the studio was renamed as Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation after being acquired by News Corporation, which was spun-off and replaced with 21st Century Fox in 2013, after spinning off its publishing assets. In 2019, Disney purchased 20th Century through its acquisition of 21st Century Fox. The studio’s current name was adopted on January 17, 2020. As of December 4, 2020, the company has been using 20th Century Studios, Inc. as copyright for 20th Century Studios and Searchlight Pictures, while the company has been using 20th Television, Inc. for the copyright of 20th Television productions as a Disney subsidiary.
