HBO, in full Home Box Office Inc., is a leading premium American cable television company headquartered in New York City. It was founded in 1972 by Time Inc. HBO, from its beginning is known for implied-originally emphasized uncut and commercial free movies.
In 1975, HBO became the first American network to deliver its programming through satellite becoming the first national cable channel. In 1980, it introduced a sister channel, Cinemax to compete with its rival cable channels at a lower price point. In a decade, HBO and Cinemax each established a second channel, called HBO 2 and Cinemax 2, respectively. The number of channels kept growing into HBO Family, HBO Latino, HBO Go and HBO Max.
The network operates a whole-time linear multiplex channels and subscription video on HBO On Demand and operates an expanded streaming platform called HBO Max. HBO Max includes original programming made exclusively for the service and content from other associated Warner Media properties.
